The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Students’ Parliament has emerged as winners of the 2023 Commonwealth Inter-University Debate Championship, held from 13th to 14th March, 2023 at the Accra International Conference Centre. The Competition is organised annually by the Parliament of Ghana to commemorate Commonwealth Day, and to inspire a passion for debate in youth across Commonwealth countries.
The KNUST Debate Team, comprising Michael Yeboah Ampah, Andrews Terku, and Chleo-Patra Azantilow Awompomi, exhibited exceptional intellectual prowess and debating skills. The team defeated other public universities in Ghana, including the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Ghana, to win the championship trophy.
Presenting the trophy, the Speaker of the KNUST Students’ Parliament, Rt. Hon. Bright Somfou Serinye expressed his excitement and pride for the team’s exceptional achievement in winning the Championship. He revealed that the team won the Competition last year and has retained the trophy this year, proving their dominance in the art of debating. He remarked that the Competition has taught the team valuable lessons, and he looks forward to having more engagements with the Ghanaian Debate Society.
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, in turn, praised the team and expressed her delight in the team's success. She stated that their victory reaffirmed her belief that intelligent debates can effectively address some of the world's significant problems.
The KNUST Students’ Parliamentary Council also presented citations to the Vice-Chancellor and Director of Students’ Affairs, Professor Wilson Agyei Agyare, in recognition of their benevolent contributions and excellent leadership towards the KNUST Students’ Parliament.
